About Artist

Alex Fernandez was born in NY, yet of Dominican heritage, he began developing his interest in art as early 5 years of age.He used comic books as his artistic influence. At the age of 10 he moved with his parents to their native Dominican Republic and there he began to be influenced by the artistic carnival traditions of the city of Santiago. In 1997 he returned to New York and began to study at City College of New York (CUNY) in the field of computer science. His artistic desires had been toned down during his teenage years, however as a sophomore in college he discovered the field of Graphic Design. He decided to change his career and ultimately this rekindled his love for fine art, thanks to the encouragement of the fine art Professor Leo Fuentes. Ultimately graduating with a B.F.A. in Electronic Design and Multimedia and with little, to no education, in fine arts, he embarked in the quest for his true passion.

He began to study at the Art Students League under Hugo Bastidas in 2002 in search of knowledge to pursue his true artistic passion, but circumstances of his life prevented a long stay. So he decided to teach himself everything he can of fine art with books. Studying various methods and art movements and finding many influences in the European Academic art movement of the 19th century. He decided to create art emulating what now is being called the classical realism movement and mixing it with traditional Dominican values and expressions of human emotions.
Currently Alex is involved with the Colective of Dominican-American Visual Artist group (CAVDA) and is currently working on a solo drawing exhibition, dealing with emotions on portraits.
